History

Johns Creek, Georgia, began as part of the Cherokee Nation until the 1830s, when the U.S. government seized the land during the Gold Rush and forced the Cherokee removal on the Trail of Tears. Early settlers established trading posts and ferry crossings along the Chattahoochee River, and small communities like Sheltonville and Newtown grew from these crossroads. The name “Johns Creek” comes from a stream in the area, likely honoring Johnson K. Rogers, the Cherokee son of pioneer John Rogers. For much of its history, the region was rural farmland until the late 20th century, when Technology Park Atlanta spurred rapid suburban development. Johns Creek officially became a city on December 1, 2006, and is now one of Georgia’s newest and most vibrant communities.
